Turn Up The Heat!

Cold temperatures are here in Central Kentucky and that means a lot of people are turning on their furnaces and snuggling up under blankets. But what do you do if your bedroom is nice and toasty, but your living room feels 10 degrees cooler? Before you head to the thermostat to kick it up a few degrees, here are a few things you can do to ensure that your home is heating evenly.

1. Check for drafts.

In some cases, a room might be too cold because heat is leaking out, rather than not having enough put in. Check the windows and exterior doors in colder rooms for drafts. If you feel one, caulk around the cracks, change out your weather stripping, or make your own draft stopper to put in front of your doors. Drafts can consume up to 30 percent of your home’s energy usage so make sure you plug them up!

2. Clear the vents.

Your vents can’t work properly if they’re blocked or clogged. Move any furniture, drapes, or decorations away from the vent to give it sufficient space to do its job.

3. Open the heat registers.

Your heat registers will have a small lever or knob on them that will adjust the flow of the air coming out. Make sure the vents are opened as far as they will go to allow as much warm air in the room as possible.

4. Check the other vents.

Go to the hottest room in your house (even if you’re trying to fix a cold room) and reduce the vent-flow by half. Wait about an hour, and see if that brings the room’s temperature down to the target level. If it doesn’t, reduce the flow by half again. Repeat as many times as necessary.

Just note that for rooms that are consistently colder due to their position in the house – such as a basement – balancing your heating system probably won’t solve the problem. Instead, try putting a space heater in the room, or keep a lot of blankets handy!
