The Kentucky Derby, What You Need To Know

The Kentucky Derby, Everything You Need to Know

By Taylor Hatton

The Kentucky Derby is upon us this weekend. It is a tradition unlike any other. Derby day is the pride of the bluegrass with the big hats, bourbon, and beautiful horses racing down the track. And when the garland of roses is placed on the back of this year’s winner history will be made when horse racing's most prestigious title, the run for the roses, crowns a new champion. Here is what you need to know about tomorrow’s race, and which horses you want to be rooting for during the fastest two minutes in sports.

A horse’s name is an important part of its identity, most viewers based on the horse’s name alone. Here is a quick rundown of tomorrow's competitors. In the first slot, closest to the gate we have a horse by the name of Known Agenda, next in the second slot is Like The King, in third is Brooklyn Strong, fourth is Keepmeinmind, in fifth we have Sainthood, the sixth slot holds O Besos, the seventh slot is home to Mandaloun, the eighth slot will hold Medina Spirit, Hot Rod Charlie will gear up in the ninth slot, Midnight Bourbon will settle into the tenth slot, starting in the eleventh slot will be Dynamic One, and floating up to the twelfth slot is a horse by the name of Helium, tucked away in the thirteenth slot is Hidden Stash, the fourteenth slot holds the favorite to win, Essential Quality, the horse in the fifteenth slot is going to rock, rock, Rock Your World, the sixteenth slot is home to King Fury, eager to step into the seventeenth slot is the horse Highly Motivated, rising into the eighteenth slot is Super Stock, if you are feeling a little hungry then you might be interested in the horse in the nineteenth slot, Soup And Sandwich, last and certainly not least in the twentieth slot is Bourbonic! Those are a lot of names to remember so let’s filter them down to the ones you really need to know about.

The all-around favorite of tomorrow’s race is the undefeated horse Essential Quality, listed at 2-1 odds. The next favorite is Rock Your World who is sitting at 5-1 odds. Not far behind however is Known Agenda who is sitting at 6-1 odds. Behind them however the field becomes pretty open with most horses sitting anywhere between 30-1 through 50-1 odds. Essential Quality is the hometown favorite down here in the Bluegrass, he was born here in the state of Kentucky and will wear Kentucky blue silks. His trainer Brad Cox was also born in Kentucky and has won many races in the state at tracks such as Keeneland and Churchill Downs. Another thing to keep your eye out for is that trainer Brad Cox also has trained another horse running in tomorrow's race, that being Mandaloun sitting at 15-1. One other thing to look out for in this race is iconic trainer Bob Baffert, who has trained the last two Triple Crown winners has a horse in this race, that horse being Medina Spirit at 15-1 odds.

There are a lot of exciting things to look out for in tomorrow's race whether it is another potential Triple Crown winner or a true Kenctucky thoroughbred pulling out the victory and representing our great state with pride. I hope you are excited for all the action coming up. So grab a glass of bourbon, put on your derby hat, and let’s all enjoy the fastest two minutes in sports.
