Housing Starts Best in Over Four Years:

The rebound in U.S. home building accelerated in December, capping the best year for the industry since 2008 and adding to signs that residential real estate is contributing to economic growth. According to Commerce Department data, New Home Starts climbed 12.1 percent last month to a 954,000 annual rate, which exceeded all forecasts of economists. Spurred by record-low mortgage rates, home construction will probably keep making headway in 2013 as it recovers from the worst slump since the Great Depression. Housing starts remain short of the 2.07 million in 2005 at the peak of the boom, which was three-decade high. They averaged 1.74...

Keep Your Carpet Looking New

There are many types of flooring to choose from to use in your Central Kentucky home. One of the most popular is carpet. Many homeowners prefer carpeting or area rugs in living rooms or bedrooms, but carpeting can be more of a challenge to keep clean than other floor surfaces. Many carpeting options come with a variety of warranties, but normal wear and tear can make even the most expensive carpet seem old and dingy. Here are a few tips to keep your carpet in your home looking like new.

  • A large part of wear and tear on carpet is regular foot traffic. Carpeting on stairs, in front of doorways, and around the sofa will have more traffic, and therefore, more wear and tear. See if you can change the arrangement of your furniture to alter traffic patterns to avoid condensing the damage to one area. You could also put down area rugs or...

Keep your Central Kentucky home healthy this Winter

The weather here in Central Kentucky has been particularly moody the past couple of weeks! We’ve had everything from snow and ice storms to 60 degree temperatures already—and it’s only the middle of January! Unfortunately, since the weather has been so inconsistent, now is the time when you start to hear sniffles, coughs, and sneezes all around you. While you can’t always stay away from people who are sick at your office or school, you can try to keep germs at bay in your home. Here are a few tips to keep your home as bacteria-free as possible!

1. Wash your hands....

Real Estate Goals for 2013 for Buyers and Sellers

As we mentioned in our previous blog post, we talked about setting SMART goals for yourself in 2013. If you’re thinking about buying or selling a home in 2013, we at Milestone would like to help you with that goal! Whether you are buying or selling this year, here is a list of things you can do now to set yourself up for success to meet your financial and real estate goals in the upcoming year.

Buyers: Get your finances in order in 2013.

Bang for your buck renovations

Construction was just completed on the enlargement of the University of Kentucky’s locker room in Rupp Arena.  Plans included adding larger lockers, a training room, showers, bathrooms, hydrotherapy improvements, a team lounge, offices for coaches, and a team meeting room. The renovated locker room also features flooring from the 2012 NCAA championship game, in which UK won, and a 2012 championship banner hanging from the ceiling. You can take a tour of the newly renovated room here. While you may not have the...

Give Your Home A Facelift!

Is younger really better? When it comes to your house, it could be! If you plan on selling your Kentucky home in 2013, keep your home from looking outdated and tired by giving it a facelift! Here are a few simple ideas to give your home a boost without breaking the bank.
  • Focus on your front door. The front door is the first thing that people see when they walk up to your house. Make sure it makes a good first impression. Get clean or replace old hardware. For a quick and inexpensive way to freshen up your door, get a can of Rust-oleum spray paint in any color (we prefer Oil Rubbed Bronze), and spray paint the hardware. You can buy it at your local Lowes or Home Depot for around $6.00. You can see a good tutorial on this quick DIY project on our Pinterest page.
  • Touch up exterior paint. Ignoring worn-out paint exposes your siding to...

Resolutions vs. Goals

Welcome to 2013!

The new year is a time when many people make resolutions; promises to change or modify behaviors or actions to better their lives or situations. We all know the typical resolutions that people make: lose weight, quit smoking, eliminate stress, get organized, eat healthier, go to the gym, etc, etc, etc.

Unfortunately, we also know that most people fail to carry out their resolutions throughout the year. Anyone who has ever made and broken a New Year’s Resolution can appreciate the difficulty of behavior change. Making a lasting change in behavior is rarely a simple process, and usually involves a substantial commitment of time, effort and emotion.

I prefer to use the word goal instead of resolution around this time of the year. I feel like word "Resolution" is saying out loud that we want/do not want to do whereas the word "Goal" implies that a certain amount...
