How Do You Tell if a Neighborhood is Right for You?

When buying a home, the #1 thing that everyone talks about is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Consider some of these questions we found from author Evelyn Fazio, coauthor of the book Staying Sane When Buying or Selling Your Home, to make sure that location is right for you.

Do people have home pride?

Sometimes you can judge a book--or a house--by its cover. Houses that aren't kept up can signal an area full of renters or a town on the decline. But if people are investing in their properties, it's a good sign that they're staying put and believe that their homes are good investments.

Who's hanging out?

Do people spend time outside? Do you feel comfortable saying hi to anyone? Depending on your observations, that town may or may not be a good fit for you.

What does it look like at night?

A cute subdivision can look completely different at night. Walk or drive around town after the sun goes down to get a better feel on what the neighborhood will be like.

Who are my future neighbors?

Make sure your trips around town take place on the weekends because that's when more people are likely to be out and about. If there's a local coffee shop or diner around the area, grab a seat and listen in because, chances are, some of those people might be your neighbors. Don't forget to ask questions!

Is the police report positive?

By law, the police department is required to give you a copy of a crime log, if you ask them. By doing a little homework, you'll see exactly what is going on and where.

What's rush hour like?

Take a route to work when traffic is at its heaviest to find out what your commute will be like. Even if your dream neighborhood is 10 miles from work, it could take a lot longer than that to get home in the middle of rush hour.
