About Nicholasville

Nicholasville, located in Jessamine County, is a small town surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region. Its southern boundary follows the Kentucky River which offers spectacular views of the Palisades, a series of high cliffs overlooking the river. Residents enjoy the slower pace of its small-town charm while benefiting from its close proximity and easy access to Lexington, just to the north.

Like much of Central Kentucky, Nicholasville’s economy is evolving as the agricultural focus of Jessamine County moves from cattle and tobacco to alternative crops. Nicholasville is an important contributor to Central Kentucky’s growing agri-tourism business and wine production. The first commercial vineyard in the U.S.A. was in Jessamine County! It even celebrates with a fun-filled Wine and Vine Festival each spring, attracting visitors from far and wide. Nicholasville also celebrates its history and its musical heritage with festivals and events throughout the year. # A variety of new companies have invested in Nicholasville bringing new employment opportunities in healthcare, education and manufacturing among others. It is headquarters to Alltech, an international biotechnology company operating in over 80 countries and a major employer in the area.

Nicholasville is the county seat of Jessamine County, the seventh fastest-growing county in Kentucky. Much of that growth has occurred in the northern half of the county, where home-owners are affordably enjoying the elbow-room of the countryside, surrounded by horse farms and golf courses.

Primary/Secondary Schools

School attendance is compulsory in Kentucky for children between the ages of 6 and 16.

A child is eligible for the Preschool Program (Early Start) if the child becomes 4 years-of-age before October 1 and is income eligible to participate in the Free Lunch Program. Also eligible is any 3 or 4 year-old child, or a child who will become 5 after October 1, who has a special need and would benefit from an early intervention program.

Any child who becomes 5 years-of-age on or before October 1 is eligible for the Primary School Program and will be placed in a primary level class. Any child who becomes 6 years-of-age on or before October 1, who has successfully completed an entry level program prior to the start of the school year, must be enrolled in the Primary School Program. These students will be placed in a single-year, dual-year, or multi-year class.
